Frequently asked questions
It all began with a passion for creating beautiful, durable dreadlocks. As a new business based in Ireland, Selkie Dreads is dedicated to offering high-quality, handmade dreadlocks with a personal touch. Our approach is rooted in craftsmanship and integrity, ensuring that every set of dreadlocks reflects our commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction.
Washing
Wash your hair gently as normal with a residue free shampoo. Personally, I recommend Head and Shoulders for its effectiveness. You may experience some itchiness as your scalp adjusts, but I take extra care to produce soft, flexible dreadlocks with very few fly aways.
Should I detox my dreadlocks before wear?
This is a personal choice. I would recommend it if you can. When your dreadlocks are being created they are put through boiling water to seal them. This removes any germs, sets the hair in place and removes some chemical residue that may have been used for the raw material in the factory. I choose to work with high quality synthetic fibers, if I don't like it or it feels wrong I wont sell it. To detox your set use Apple Cider Vinegar, dip your set in and leave to soak for a few minutes, then rinse with cool water and hang to drip dry. Do not use hot or boiling water on your set so it keeps its shape.
Should I have bumps or irritation on my scalp after installation?
This is a very common effect after a fresh installation. Sometimes the areas around the base of your neck can be pulled too tight and can cause a red itchy bump. A good installation will be firm, close to the scalp but not pulling hair tightly. Your sections should be around half an inch square. You can loosen the braid and rebraid less tightly, be careful not to scratch the bumps and they should disappear in a few days. Some people deliberately exclude baby hairs around their ears and base of their necks from their braids for their comfort and to prevent tension bumps. it is normal to feel some tenderness in your scalp for the first couple of days and nights.
You absolutely should not have tension bumps all over your head, they should not cause uncontrollable itching, and you should not have any tightness lasting more than 48 hours. If you do, and you are sure the dreadlocks are not installed too tightly, you may have an allergy and I would advise you to remove them immediately and seek appropriate treatment from your health professional. If you have a sensitive scalp, have any dermatological issues please be careful with the health of your skin, Selkie Dreads cannot be held responsible for any allergies or skin breakdown as a result of wearing dreadlocks too tightly or not testing the material on your skin before committing to a full installation. If you think you might have an allergy I would suggest installing one or two dreadlocks at the base of your neck, detoxing the dreadlocks before wear and being vigilant of any reaction. You know your body best.
How should I sleep in them?
It's up to you! Some people use a silk bonnet or pillowcase, some tie them up, and some are more comfortable wearing them loose in bed. For loose wave style dreadlocks, we would recommend braiding them at night and separating them with water in the morning.
How do I install them?
Most people braid them in themselves at home, some have a friend do it for them, some people go to a braiding professional for a professional installation. There are thousands of tutorials on youtube, instagram and tiktok to help you. You will need a comb, a spray bottle of water to dampen your hair, and elastics or thread of your choice. I can send you some tutorial links by email on request.
Can I use oils?
We do not recommend using oils on synthetic hair. Firstly, the oil will snap your elastic bands. Synthetic hair cannot absorb oils, and the oil will attract dust and grime onto your synthetic hair. Sprays specifically designed for synthetic hair and wigs can be used instead.
Are they heavy?
Loose wave sets are generally around 300g
Airy Twist sets are roughly 300g
Classic crocheted dreadlocks of pencil or sharpie thicknesses can be up to 600g for a full set of 60 DE dreadlocks.
I would recommend starting with a lighter set or partial set and working your way up.
