What you see is what you get. One artist on her own blending, back combing and crocheting dreadlocks into unique works of art.
Our journey from inspiration to creation
Hi there, I'm Claire, and welcome to my one-woman Irish dreadlock creation business, Selkie Dreads. During the 2020-2022 Covid 19 lockdown, I yearned for a mega hair transformation that wouldn't damage my hair. That's when I discovered synthetic dreadlocks while searching for easy to install extensions. I bought some machine made cheap dreadlocks from a big online retailer, and realized that while they looked ok, they were not comfortable and I could make better myself. After figuring out how to braid them in, I was constantly stopped by people in the street admiring them and asking where to get them. When I was made redundant from my accounts payable job (best thing that ever happened to me) , I used the time to teach myself to crochet synthetic dreadlocks through thousands of hours of tutorials and practice. Finding dreadlocks allowed me to find myself and make space for creativity in my life, and so Selkie Dreads was born. Each dreadlock set is individually crafted in a variety of styles and textures, without any chemicals, machines or braiding gels. I started with an Etsy store and it really took off, but no it's time to branch out and have a website of my own . As I crochet your dreadlocks, my mind wanders, I travel to far away and mystical places, and I am always surprised by what my hands create. There is nothing better than seeing your order come together into a unique, individually inspired set.
The art of making dreadlocks at Selkie Dreads
At Selkie Dreads, the creation of each piece is a meticulous process. For crochet dreadlocks, the fibre is carefully backcombed and crocheted, then sealed in boiling water for durability. Twisted dreadlocks are crafted by hand-blending and stretching the fibre, then steam-sealed using a special technique I've developed. This unique method ensures a light, comfortable, and flexible dreadlock that feels as good as it looks.
